Joe Savage (Niuean name unknown) was born in 1847 on Niue Island and later settled on Badu Island, where he died on 23 June 1922. He married Zaraza, a native woman from Badu Island, and together they raised a family shaped largely through traditional adoption in accordance with Torres Strait Islander kinship practices.
Their children were Annie Ahwang (Nee: Savage), Zaraza’s biological daughter from her first marriage; Eccles Tamwoy, adopted from Harry Peo Newie and his wife of Parama Island; Alion Newie (Nee: Baluz/Savage), adopted from Zaraza’s sister; Powanga (Snr) Savage, adopted from Maivanga (also known as Bozi) and Aiaga Savage of Mua Island, who died in 1900 and was buried at Dabu, Mua Island; and Maryann Mairu (Nee: Savage), who was also traditionally adopted.
